BIG MANTRA: Rakhe Rakhanhar for Protection, Guidance, and Peace

In yogic teaching, sound is the first creative element of the universe: sound creates space, and from space the other elements emerge. Naad is this current of sound. Through mantra, ancient sounds travel through time and space, and they find us.

Longer and more intricate mantras invite a dedicated practice of their own. Big Mantra gives us time to learn their pronunciation, rhythm, meaning, and structure, and then experience them through sustained repetition and selected meditations that use them. We’ll also work directly with sound: how we create it, perceive it, and receive it.

This Big Mantra workshop focuses on Rakhe Rakhanhar, a mantra of complete protection. These words of Guru Arjan, the Fifth Sikh Guru, come from Rehras, the Sikh evening prayer. It adds energy to one's being, and helps when you are physically weak or have limited wealth. It is a victory song which allows us to be guided by God's graceful and merciful hand. It does away with the obstacles to fulfilling one's destiny. It rids you of pain.

Rakhe Rakhanhar realigns the mind with the knowledge that God is at work everywhere. Its words carry us from adversity toward trust, from pain toward peace, and from fear toward the shelter of the Divine. The mantra calls upon God’s grace and mercy to clear obstacles and dispel negative forces within and around us.

Together, we’ll explore the sound, meaning, and structure of Rakhe Rakhanhar and the experience of chanting it as an affirmation of divine protection. Through meditation and sustained repetition, we will work with releasing hostility, resentment, and judgment while calling forth peace and the well-being of all.

Translation: The Great Protector, who protects and exists within us, lifts us up. God brings us to the Lotus Feet of the Guru and takes care of our affairs. Merciful, kind, and compassionate, God does not let us forget the Divine within our minds. In the company of the Holy, we are carried across the challenges and calamities of the world. Negativity and slander are dispelled. The Lord is our anchor. Nanak says: keep this firmly within your mind. Through remembrance of God, peace and happiness come, and sorrow and pain depart.
