What Happens in Kundalini Yoga Class ?
TUNING IN
Every Kundalini Yoga session begins with chanting the Adi Mantra “Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo.” By chanting it we become open to the higher self, the source of all guidance, and accesses the protective link between us and the consciousness of the “golden chain” of all Divine teachers. ONG NAMO GURU DEV NAMO can be translated I bow to the infinite wisdom of the Universe, I bow to the divine teacher within This mantra is done three times at the beginning of every Kundalini yoga class.
RECITING THE ADI MANTRA
Sit in easy pose with the palms together as if in prayer. Gently press the sides of the thumbs into the center of the chest at the sternum. Inhale deeply. Focus your concentration at the third eye point. As you exhale chant the mantra on one breath or you can take a sip of air in through the mouth after Ong Namo and before Guru Dev Namo. The “O” sound in Ong is long and of short duration. The “NG” sound is a prolonged sound through the nose. The first part of Namo is short and rhymes with “mom.” The “O,” as in “go,” is held longer. “Gu” in Guru is pronounced as in the word “good” and is short. The second syllable rhymes with “true” and is long. The word Dev rhymes with “gave” and is short. Chant this mantra at least three times before beginning your Kundalini Yoga practice.
It can be followed by the Mangala Charan Mantra
AD GURAY NAMEH, JUGAD GURAY NAMEH, SAT GURAY NAMEH, SIRI GURU DAY-VAY NAMEH - I bow to the Primal Wisdom, I bow to the Wisdom of the Ages, I bow to the True Wisdom, I bow to the Great Unseen Wisdom. This is repeated just after the mantra above, as we begin class. This focuses the group while creating projection and protection in the aura of the individual and the group as a whole. This mantra can be repeated any time you feel a need for a sense of safety and well-being.
At the end of class we sing the Long Time Sun
MAY THE LONG TIME SUN SHINE UPON YOU ALL LOVE SURROUND YOU
AND THE PURE LIGHT WITHIN YOU GUIDE YOUR WAY ON
MAY THE LONG TIME SUN SHINE UPON YOU ALL LOVE SURROUND YOU
AND THE PURE LIGHT WITHIN YOU
GUIDE YOUR WAY ON GUIDE YOUR WAY ON GUIDE YOUR WAY ON
SAT NAM
“Sat Nam” means “My true Identity” or “Truth is my Name”. We use this phrase to connect with our higher self/purpose, always bringing ourselves back to our soul’s true identity—beyond our own ego or any other’s idea of who we are supposed to be.
PACING YOURSELF
Kundalini Yoga exercises may involve rhythmic movement between two or more postures. Begin slowly, keeping a steady rhythm. Increase gradually, being careful not to strain. Usually the more you practice the exercise, the faster you can go. Just be sure that the spine has become warm and flexible before attempting rapid movements. It is important to be aware of your body and to be responsible for its well-being.
MENTAL FOCUS
Unless you are instructed otherwise focus your attention at your brow point. With your eyes closed mentally locate this point by turning your eyes gently upward and inward toward the root of your nose. We call this focusing at the third eye point. Be aware of your breath, your body, your movements and any mantra your may be using.
LINKING BREATH WITH MANTRA.
A powerful technique is to mentally link SAT to every inhale and NAM to every exhale. In this way the breath and the mantra work together to calm us down, energize and purify us and link us to our true identity.
